ADSSI calls for stronger investment in home and community care following Federal Budget
NSW home care group ADSSI Limited has welcomed the Australian Government’s continued investment in aged care reform, while calling for greater funding to ensure older Australians can access the care they need at home.
The 12 May Federal Budget includes additional funding for aged care, particularly improvements to the Support at Home program. However, concerns remain across the sector that the level of new funding does not match the growing demand for in-home and community-based care, with peak body Ageing Australia also highlighting the shortfall in Support at Home packages and lack of new funding for the Commonwealth Home Support Program.
John Baillie, ADSSI Limited CEO, supports the Government’s focus on strengthening aged care and improving access to personal care services.
“We welcome the Government’s continued investment in aged care reform and the steps taken to make essential care more accessible and affordable for older Australians.
“For many people, care at home is the best option to maintain independence, connection and dignity,” Mr Baillie said.
Despite these measures, ADSSI urges increased funding for Support at Home and CHSP to meet rising demand.
“There is strong and growing demand in our communities for in-home care, and providers like ADSSI have the experience and capacity to deliver more support.
“However, access to care is constrained by the number of funded packages available, as well as the additional cost of delivering services in rural communities and ongoing workforce shortages. These factors make it even more challenging to respond to demand where support is needed most,” Mr Baillie said.
Timely in-home care is vital for sustaining the health system and preventing unnecessary hospital or residential aged care admissions.
“When older people can access the right support at home, it leads to better outcomes not just for individuals, but for the entire health system.
“Investing in home and community care is not just the right thing to do; it is essential infrastructure for a sustainable aged care system, Mr Baillie concluded.
ADSSI is seeking action to improve timely access to home care for older Australians, calling for additional Support at Home packages to address demand and reduce wait times. The group is also calling for sustainable funding for the Commonwealth Home Support Program, and ongoing consultation with providers delivering care on the ground.
